Georgia joins Earth Hour, lights to go out nationwide
Georgia has joined the global Earth Hour initiative, observed annually on the last Saturday of March, with authorities and organisers calling on the public to switch off electricity for one hour.
According to Georgian media reports cited by Caliber.Az, participants are encouraged to turn off lights from 20:30 to 21:30 local time. During this period, illumination at major landmarks across the country will also be turned off as part of the campaign.
At the same time, Kazakhstan is holding its own environmental action linked to the initiative, with a focus on promoting ecotourism. The campaign is organised under the auspices of the World Wide Fund for Nature and will take place for the 19th time globally in 2026, and for the 17th time in Kazakhstan.
According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Ecology, lights will be switched off nationwide at exactly 20:30, with households, offices, and public spaces participating in the hour-long blackout.
Among the prominent sites where lighting will be turned off are Baiterek Tower, Hazret Sultan Mosque, Astana Arena, Alau Ice Palace, Hotel Kazakhstan, and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, among others.
“Supporting the campaign is simple—turn off lights and electrical appliances for one hour,” the ministry said.
