Georgia names former media head as ambassador to Qatar

Varlam Avaliani, the former director of the television company Rustavi 2, is set to be appointed as Georgia’s ambassador to Qatar.

The nomination was put forward by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. Upon approval by President Mikheil Kavelashvili, Avaliani is expected to officially assume the post on November 10.

Avaliani led Rustavi 2 from 2021 until his resignation this June. Prior to his tenure at the media company, he held several governmental roles, including serving as an advisor to the Minister of Defence from 2012 to 2014, followed by a position as Deputy Minister.
