Georgia proposes treating critics of "foreign agents" law as spies
The parliamentary party "People' Power" in Georgia has suggested that those vehemently opposing the "foreign agents" law should be prosecuted under charges of "treason" and "espionage", Caliber.Az echoes Georgian media outlets.
Georgian MP and "People's Power" leader, Guram Macharashvili, emphasized the need to hold accountable individuals who engage in harassment, insults, and psychological coercion against supporters of the law. Macharashvili argued that allowing such behaviour with impunity could undermine the country's sovereignty and stability.
He proposed that the trials of these "traitors" should be broadcast live, drawing parallels to the Nuremberg trials. The suggestion comes amid warnings from Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honourable chairman and founder of the ruling party "Georgian Dream", about post-election repressions targeting the "collective National Movement".
"People's Power" serves as a satellite party of the "Georgian Dream", with its members comprising the parliamentary majority. Proposals from its representatives often find resonance within the ruling team, such as the initiation of the first version of the "foreign agents" law in April 2023.
