Georgia's ruling party postpones election programme presentation

01 October 2024 09:27

The ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia Party has delayed the planned presentation of its election programme, which was scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, citing concerns over Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's health.

Kobakhidze, who also leads the party's election headquarters, was unable to attend, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.

The new date for the programme's release will be provided by the party's press office soon.

On Monday, September 30, the regular government meeting led by Prime Minister Kobakhidze was also cancelled.

Last week, Prime Minister Kobakhidze was in the United States, where he delivered a speech at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

"We are optimistic and believe that Georgia's desire to become a full member of the European Union will be realised by 2030," Kobakhidze affirmed during his address.

He did not, however, reference the recent suspension of Georgia's EU integration by Brussels.

Kobakhidze further emphasized that Georgia is at a turning point in its history. He stated that the country’s developmental path will be determined by the needs and aspirations of its citizens.

The Georgian Dream party’s candidate list includes 170 individuals, with the top twenty being led by key figures such as the party's founder and chairman, Bidzina Ivanishvili, who holds the first position. Prime Minister Kobakhidze follows in second place. Georgian citizens will elect the 21st Parliament on October 26, with elections conducted entirely through a proportional system, employing advanced electronic verification and vote-counting technologies for the first time.
