Georgia shuts border crossing with Russia to all traffic
13 January 2026 09:35
The Georgian authorities have closed the road linking Georgia and Russia through the Upper Lars border crossing to all types of vehicles, citing avalanche risks, the Georgian Department of Motorways said.
According to the department, travel has been prohibited on the Gudauri–Kobi section of the Mtskheta–Stepantsminda–Lars international highway due to the heightened danger of avalanches. The route had already been closed to trucks since January 9, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The Upper Lars crossing is currently the only land route connecting Armenia with Russia via Georgian territory.
