Georgia signals fresh start in US relations, eyes transit security via Trump Route
Levan Zhorzholiani, the Head of the Georgian Government Administration, held a high-level meeting with a delegation from the US State Department, led by Jonathan Askonas, to discuss key transit and regional security initiatives.
The discussion centered on measures undertaken by the Georgian government to enhance the country’s role as a regional transit hub, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Telegram channel of Sputnik Georgia.
During the meeting, Zhorzholiani reaffirmed Georgia’s readiness to renew and strengthen its strategic partnership with the United States from a fresh starting point.
The delegation also reviewed Georgia’s position on the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), emphasizing the initiative’s potential to positively influence regional logistics and security through US-backed guarantees for cargo movement.
The Trump Route is a US-brokered infrastructure project aimed at establishing a multimodal transit corridor through southern Armenia, connecting Azerbaijan’s mainland to its Nakhchivan exclave. The route, approximately 40–43 km long in Armenia’s Syunik region, includes rail, road, gas and oil pipelines, power lines, and fibre-optic cables. It is part of ongoing Azerbaijan-Armenia normalisation efforts following the 2020 Karabakh war and subsequent anti-terror operation in 2023 that fully restored Azerbaijan’s sovereignty.
