Georgia suspends truck traffic to Russia border due to severe weather
Truck traffic has been suspended on the road leading to the Georgian border with Russia due to adverse weather conditions on February 7, Georgian authorities said.
According to a statement by the Georgian Road Administration, heavy goods vehicles are temporarily prohibited from using the Georgian Military Highway on the stretch between Gudauri and Kobi, which leads to the Verkhny Lars border checkpoint, Caliber.Az reports.
The restrictions were imposed because of a high risk of traffic accidents caused by severe weather. From the morning of February 7 and until further notice, only light vehicles are permitted to travel along the affected section of the road, and they must do so without stopping.
The Georgian Road Administration also instructed all drivers to use avalanche protection tunnels where these are available as an alternative to the main roadway.
No timetable has been given for when normal traffic will resume.
