Georgian PM accuses Europe of double standards on Russia
Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze has sharply criticised what he described as double standards by European institutions, arguing that their positions no longer carry weight with Georgian society.
Speaking to local media, Kobakhidze said that Western countries continue to pressure Tbilisi to impose sanctions on Russia, while at the same time maintaining their own trade ties with Moscow, as per Caliber.Az.
He said that Georgia’s policy is guided by its own principles, in contrast to what he characterised as inconsistent behaviour by European officials.
“For us, the main thing is that we have principles, and we act in accordance with these principles, which the European bureaucracy does not do. Back in 2022, when the war had just begun, four times more wine was exported to Russia from Lithuania and Latvia than from Georgia. Neither of them is a winemaking country. In reality, re-export was taking place. They themselves should sell wine, but our farmers and winemakers are not allowed to sell wine in Russia. These double standards are precisely an expression of a lack of principles,” Kobakhidze said.
