Georgian PM slams German ambassador over remarks on EU integration
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has criticized German Ambassador to Tbilisi Peter Fischer over remarks made in a recent interview discussing public attitudes toward European integration in Georgia.
In an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Fischer suggested that some Georgian citizens view European Union membership as their only viable future.
He cited an example statement reflecting this sentiment: “I don’t want to be Russian, Turkish, Iranian, or Azerbaijani—perhaps being together with Armenia alone is not enough.”
Responding to the comments, Kobakhidze described the remarks as “frivolous and regrettable.” He added that Fischer, while referring to friendly countries and peoples, ultimately placed them in a negative context.
