German Free Democrats push for immediate delivery of Taurus missiles to Ukraine
The Free Democratic Party (FDP) of Germany has submitted a resolution to the Bundestag urging the government to supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.
The proposal underscores the need for immediate action to bolster Ukraine’s ability to strike Russian military targets "far beyond the front line", Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The resolution calls for providing Ukraine with Germany's long-range weaponry, a NATO membership guarantee, and a defined pathway for Ukraine's integration into the alliance. Additionally, the FDP advocates for a new aid package for Ukraine to be finalized before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20, 2025.
Christian Dürr, head of the FDP parliamentary group, criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) during a Bundestag session for their cautious approach to arms deliveries. Dürr accused the government of delaying critical decisions, stating, "Repeatedly, as in the case of tank deliveries, the chancellor eventually relented, and the deliveries were made, but they were always too little and too late."
Chancellor Scholz has maintained his opposition to supplying Ukraine with cruise missiles, citing the risk of escalation. In late October, he reiterated his stance, stating that delivering such weaponry could provoke further conflict and rejecting proposals involving strikes on Russian territory using Western long-range arms.
This debate follows recent remarks by Germany’s defence minister about the potential deployment of German troops to Ukraine, signalling ongoing discussions over the nation’s support for Kyiv amid the conflict.
