German rail operator faces cyberattack, ticketing systems affected
Germany’s state-owned railway operator Deutsche Bahn disclosed that a cyberattack briefly disrupted its ticketing systems and timetable information services this week.
The distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack affected the railway’s website and its widely used DB Navigator app on the afternoon of February 17. While most issues were resolved by that evening, disruptions resurfaced on the morning of February 18, Caliber.Az reports, citing German media.
Deutsche Bahn, which operates passenger and cargo trains as well as suburban commuter rail services across Germany, said its defensive measures helped limit the impact.
“Our defensive measures were effective in minimising the impact on our customers,” the company said.
An Interior Ministry spokeswoman added that Deutsche Bahn has been in contact with Germany’s cybersecurity authority, BSI, though she provided few additional details about the attack.
