Germany, Israel to launch joint drone defence research project
Germany is partnering with Israel to develop a joint research project focused on strengthening drone defence systems, Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt confirmed in an interview with the Rheinische Post editorial team.
Dobrindt said the initiative comes in response to a growing technological arms race between drone threats and defence systems. He stressed that current defence capabilities are not yet sufficient to neutralise all types of drones, some of which can be purchased commercially while others are military-grade, Caliber.Az reports.
He emphasised that critical infrastructure, civilians, and major public events remain vulnerable to drone-related incidents.
The minister noted that while existing systems are capable of detecting and neutralising most drones, tests have revealed that certain models still evade interception. This, he said, underscores the need for continuous technological advancement and international collaboration.
Dobrindt also announced plans to establish a national drone competence center that would bring together the expertise and resources of the federal government, German states, and the Bundeswehr. He argued that such coordination is essential for building a resilient and effective national defence strategy against drone threats.
So far in 2025, there have been over 140 drone sightings near airports across Germany. Each of these incidents has the potential to disrupt flight operations or endanger passengers.
