Germany's RWE expands green hydrogen capacity with leading electrolysis company

12 December 2024 07:03

Sunfire, a German leading electrolysis company, has secured a major contract with RWE company to build a green hydrogen production facility.

Electrolysis firm Sunfire has been contracted to build a green hydrogen production facility in Germany. The 100 MW electrolyzer will be installed at RWE's site in Lingen, marking the energy utility's largest hydrogen project to date. The investment decision for the project has now been finalized, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

German energy provider RWE (Rheinisch-Westfälisches Elektrizitätswerk) is making significant strides in the renewable energy transition. Its recent commitment to a 100 MW hydrogen production project underscores the company's dedication to clean energy solutions. With a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, RWE has already made substantial moves away from fossil fuels, investing in solar, wind, and green hydrogen technologies.

Sunfire, a leader in hydrogen technology, has been selected to install a large-scale 100 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer in Lingen, Lower Saxony, following RWE’s final investment decision (FID). The company specializes in two key types of electrolysis technology: solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) and alkaline electrolysis (AEL). Both processes use renewable energy to convert water into hydrogen, supporting the decarbonization of industrial sectors such as chemicals and steel production.

Sunfire’s rapid growth in the renewable energy space has been fueled by significant financial backing, enabling the company to scale up its green hydrogen solutions for industrial applications. Its innovative technology is particularly well-suited for industrial use, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while promoting sustainable development.

Sunfire has been contracted to supply RWE with 10 pressurized alkaline modules, each with a capacity of 10 MW. This will increase the total capacity of the RWE plant to 300 MW, with Sunfire's electrolyzer contributing one-third of the energy required. The company will also handle the installation and commissioning of the electrolyzer, which is expected to begin operation in 2027. The project is similar to another hydrogen facility in California, US, and is expected to produce two tons of hydrogen per hour, primarily serving the North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony regions.
