Giorgia Meloni temporarily takes charge of Italy’s Tourism Ministry
On March 27, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni temporarily assumed leadership of the Ministry of Tourism following the resignation of Daniela Santanchè, according to L’Unione Sarda, citing the government’s press office.
The dismissal of Santanchè was formalised by President Sergio Mattarella. The move came after an unsuccessful referendum on judicial reform held on March 22-23, in which nearly 54% of voters rejected constitutional changes.
Meloni had previously criticised the judicial system for political bias and a left-leaning orientation. After the vote, she acknowledged the defeat and emphasised that ultimate authority belongs to the people.
Santanchè, currently under investigation for alleged falsification of reports within the publishing group Visibilia, resigned with the backing of Deputy Justice Minister Andrea Delmastro and Chief of Staff Giusi Bartolozzi. Meloni assured that the government would continue functioning effectively until the end of its term.
