Greece eyes Indian WHAP 8×8 armored vehicle in army modernization push
Greece is assessing the Indian WHAP 8×8 armored vehicle as a potential candidate for future Greek Army requirements, marking a significant step in Athens’ ongoing efforts to modernize its armed forces, The Defense Watch reports.
The WHAP 8×8, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro, is designed for highly mobile infantry and mechanized operations. Its modular architecture allows the platform to be configured as an infantry fighting vehicle, armored personnel carrier, or command and support variant.
The Greek Army is evaluating several 8×8 armored vehicle options to replace aging platforms and enhance mobility across diverse terrain. The WHAP 8×8 offers amphibious capability, high road speed, and scalable protection levels, features that align with Greece’s operational requirements.
The vehicle has undergone testing by the Indian Army in desert, mountain, and coastal environments. It can be fitted with remote weapon stations, medium-caliber cannons, or anti-tank guided missiles, depending on mission requirements.
If selected, the WHAP 8×8 would represent one of India’s first major armored vehicle entries into the European defence market. It would also highlight Greece’s interest in diversifying defence suppliers beyond traditional European and US manufacturers.
Indian officials have increasingly promoted the WHAP platform as part of New Delhi’s broader initiative to expand defence exports, particularly to NATO member states and partner nations.
No procurement decision has yet been announced, and the evaluation process remains in its early stages. Greek defence officials are expected to continue technical and operational assessments before any formal acquisition process moves forward.
