Gridlock at Ukraine-EU border as thousands of trucks stranded amid protests
Thousands of trucks are trapped at the Ukraine-EU border, with extensive queues forming due to protests by Polish farmers.
The border between Ukraine and several European Union nations has become a bottleneck for trade and transportation, with approximately 3,200 trucks stranded in long queues stretching across multiple checkpoints.
The impasse, exacerbated by protests from Polish farmers, has resulted in significant disruptions and delays, leaving drivers and businesses in limbo.
Andriy Demchenko, a spokesperson for the State Border Service of Ukraine, revealed the extent of the gridlock during an interview on Rada TV channel, Gazeta.ru reports.
According to Demchenko, Polish farmers continue to make traffic difficult for trucks. As of the morning of March 24, they blocked three directions, and previously there were six. Currently, the checkpoints Yagodin, Ugrinov, Ravva-Ruska are blocked. There are approximately 500 trucks in the queue in these three directions, most of them opposite Yagodin.
A representative of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine noted that there are queues in front of the unblocked points. About 800 trucks are parked opposite the Krakovets point, and 400 near Shehyni.
According to Demchenko, there are also queues in the direction of other countries. So, near the checkpoint Uzhgorod in the direction of Slovakia there are 300 trucks in line, at the checkpoint Tisa towards Hungary – 800, and at the checkpoint Porubne towards Romania – 400.
