Hamas faces stark warning from Lebanon over possible attacks
Lebanese authorities have delivered a strong warning to the Palestinian militant group Hamas, vowing to impose the “harshest measures” if any attacks are launched from Lebanon.
The statement was issued by the Higher Defence Council, Lebanon’s top military and security body, amid rising concerns over cross-border violence, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The warning follows the arrest of several Lebanese and Palestinian individuals suspected of involvement in recent rocket attacks into northern Israel. In a clear message aimed at preventing further escalation, the council emphasised that no group would be permitted to threaten the country’s fragile stability.
“Hamas and other factions will not be allowed to endanger national stability,” the statement read. “The safety of Lebanon’s territories is above all.”
Brigadier General Mohammed al-Mustafa, who delivered the council’s official statement, reaffirmed the government's determination to uphold national sovereignty.
“The harshest measures will be taken to put a complete end to any act that infringes on Lebanon’s sovereignty,” he said.
The warning comes at a time of heightened regional tension, with fears that Lebanon could be drawn deeper into the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. Lebanese officials have sought to avoid a wider confrontation that could destabilise the country, which is already grappling with economic and political crises.
While Lebanon is home to various Palestinian factions and militias, including Hamas and Hezbollah, its government maintains that decisions of war and peace must remain under state control. The latest statement underscores Lebanon’s intent to crack down on unauthorised military activity within its borders.
