Zelenskyy slams West over funding, weapons shortages
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has complained about a shortage of funding and military assistance from the West, a Ukrainian outlet reports.
The politician emphasised that the country’s stability depends on support from Europe and the United States, but that such support is currently insufficient. He noted that Ukraine lacks adequate air defence systems and weapons.
“Thank God, there is a European decision on funding, but, to be honest, there is a constant shortage of money—particularly for weapons production and, most importantly, drones,” Zelenskyy said.
These comments came amid a massive Russian assault on December 27, involving hundreds of drones and missiles targeting Kyiv and other areas, which Zelenskyy described as undermining peace efforts ahead of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Europe stepped up with the large loan package in mid-December 2025, backed by EU budget headroom rather than frozen Russian assets (a more controversial option that was sidelined).
U.S. aid under the Trump administration has seen no new major packages announced in 2025 beyond continuing some prior commitments, contributing to Ukraine's concerns over long-term support.
