IAEA chief hopes for renewal of US-Russia nuclear dialogue
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has expressed hope that dialogue between Russia and the United States on nuclear security issues could be resumed.
Grossi recalled that such discussions were first initiated at the Alaska summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
“I hope this will lead to the resumption of cooperation on this extremely important matter,” Grossi said.
On August 14, Putin said that the U.S. administration is making “sincere efforts” to resolve the Ukraine conflict, raising hopes for progress in nuclear arms control.
He described discussions with the U.S. as aimed at establishing “long-term conditions of peace” in Europe and globally, particularly through agreements on strategic offensive arms.
Russia and the U.S. hold the world’s largest nuclear arsenals, with the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) remaining the only binding framework. The treaty is set to expire on February 5, 2026, adding urgency to the talks.
