House of Lords member warns UK Jews at “breaking point”
British Jews are at “breaking point” following a wave of attacks on their community, an independent adviser to the government on antisemitism has warned.
Lord John Mann told Sky News that Jewish people no longer felt they could live openly in the UK safely because “perception is reality, and the reality is that there's a danger there”.
He said British Jews would leave the country if the rise in antisemitism was not addressed, warning that the UK “cannot afford” for Jewish communities to “say this is no longer the country for us, which is why it is so urgent and so big”.
He said: "We're at the breaking point. Not a breaking point where loads will go this week, next week. People aren't just going to come and up and go from where they've made their lives."
But he added: "Don't forget, everyone in the Jewish community is fleeing from somewhere."
He continued: "Jewish people in this country have always had to flee from somewhere to get here.
"Fleeing will take time, but it will happen."
Mann also said that, alongside the rest of society, the onus is on Keir Starmer, the home secretary and government ministers to demonstrate that they “stand with the Jewish community”.
