Hungary receives record gas supply from Russia, oil deliveries remain uninterrupted

26 March 2025 15:58

In 2024, Russia supplied a record 8.6 billion cubic meters of gas to Hungary, and oil deliveries via the "Druzhba" pipeline reached 4.78 million tons, according to the Russian government's press service.

"In 2024, Russian gas deliveries to Hungary reached a record 8.6 billion cubic meters, and by March 1, 2025, this figure had reached 1.18 billion cubic meters," the statement said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

In 2024, 4.78 million tons of oil were supplied to Hungary via the southern branch of the "Druzhba" pipeline, and from January to February 2025, 956,000 tons were delivered.

"We highly appreciate the balanced and objective foreign policy stance of the Hungarian leadership. Thanks to your consistently constructive position, we have been able to cooperate effectively and resolve all emerging issues despite the challenging international situation. Under current conditions, it is advisable to continue implementing the agreements previously reached in strategic areas, maintaining and expanding all the useful bilateral work done in all directions of Russian-Hungarian cooperation. Russia is firmly committed to further developing pragmatic and mutually beneficial relations with Hungary," said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, whose words were quoted following a meeting with Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó.

Novak emphasized Russia's commitment to ensuring reliable energy supplies to Hungary and expressed readiness to take all necessary measures to ensure that deliveries to partners remain uninterrupted and predictable.

In turn, Szijjártó, following talks with Novak, emphasised that Hungary considers the operations of its oil company MOL in Russia successful and hopes that its activities will expand.

"The good news is that MOL's operations in Russia are very successful, and this creates an opportunity to expand its activities in Russia," the foreign minister wrote on Facebook.

He also noted that "energy cooperation between Hungary and Russia has withstood the most difficult times." "Despite all the difficulties, we managed to maintain the reliability of our energy supply," emphasized Szijjártó.

"Thanks to the reliability of our Russian partners, last year Hungary received a record amount of natural gas, and this year daily deliveries will exceed 20 million cubic meters. Oil deliveries are also uninterrupted: this year they will exceed 1.25 million tons," the minister added.
