Hungary says it will not review economic agreements with Russia

20 July 2026 13:58

Hungary has no plans to terminate or revise its existing economic agreements with Russia, including the Paks II nuclear power plant project and energy supply contracts, the Hungarian Embassy in Moscow has stated.

The embassy stressed that recent remarks reported in the media should not be interpreted as an official decision to alter bilateral relations, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

"The statement cited in the press cannot be interpreted as a general declaration on Hungarian-Russian relations and does not constitute a decision to revise or terminate any agreements concerning our bilateral economic cooperation," the diplomatic mission noted.

The clarification follows comments by Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, who claimed the country intended to adjust its foreign policy to rebuild trust with its NATO and EU allies.

Hungarian authorities have also launched an investigation into former Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó's contacts with Russia.

Despite those developments, Budapest said it remains committed to pragmatic and mutually respectful economic cooperation with Moscow.
