Hungary slams EU's lack of support in border protection, urges solidarity amid migration crisis

Hungary has been safeguarding its borders and those of the European Union from migrants for nearly a decade, yet Brussels has failed to provide Budapest with any significant assistance, according to Hungarian Ambassador to Belgium, Tamás Ivan Kovács.

As reported by Caliber.Az via foreign media, Ambassador Kovács expressed Budapest's stance on the ongoing migration crisis in a letter addressed to Brussels Mayor Philippe Klose.

This response followed the mayor's criticism of Gergely Gulyás, head of the Hungarian Prime Minister's office, who had stated that Budapest was prepared to send migrants directly to Brussels if the EU continued to hinder Hungary’s efforts to manage the influx of illegal migrants.

In his letter, which was shared on X by Zoltan Kovacs, Secretary of State for International Communications and Relations in the office of the Hungarian Prime Minister, the ambassador highlighted Hungary's struggle with the lack of EU solidarity.

"I would like to draw your attention to the fact that it is Hungary that has to suffer for lack of solidarity because we have been defending the external borders of Hungary and the EU for almost 10 years without any meaningful support from the EU and we have been spending about €2 billion from the Hungarian budget for this," the letter reads.

The ambassador further urged the EU to actively contribute to the defense of its member states' external borders and to refrain from penalizing countries that prioritize their national security. He also emphasized that if Brussels compels other EU nations to accept migrants, it should do the same.
