Imran Khan, spouse facing 15-day judicial remand in new Toshakhana case
An accountability court has placed Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, on a 15-day judicial remand in connection with a new Toshakhana case.
This development follows their recent acquittal in an illegal marriage case on July 13, Caliber.Az reports via Pakistani media.
The couple, who have been entangled in legal battles for months, were arrested by Pakistan’s accountability watchdog, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), in relation to state gifts acquired from the Toshakhana repository.
The court proceedings, led by Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana, saw Khan and Bibi appear after completing a 10-day physical remand. They were required to submit written responses to NAB's questionnaire. The judge has scheduled their next court appearance for September 2.
Khan, who has been imprisoned since last August, has been convicted in four cases, with two suspensions and acquittals in the remaining ones, including the illegal marriage case. His convictions have barred him from participating in the upcoming February general elections, as Pakistani law prohibits convicted felons from running for office.
Khan, a prominent figure in Pakistani politics, argues that the charges against him are politically motivated and intended to prevent his return to power. Pakistani authorities, however, refute these claims. Additionally, Khan faces multiple cases related to protests on May 9, 2023, when his supporters clashed with government and military facilities following his brief arrest in a corruption case.
