India mobilises forces in Kashmir, politicians from both sides exchange threats VIDEO

25 April 2025 17:45

India has initiated a large-scale military operation in its controlled region of Kashmir, with escalating threats between Indian and Pakistani politicians and noticeable troop movements on both sides.

Indian authorities launched extensive searches in Kashmir, combing homes and forests for militants linked to a deadly attack earlier this week that left 26 people dead—marking the deadliest assault on civilians in nearly 20 years, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

The attack, which occurred in the Pahalgam region, has sparked widespread outrage and grief in India, leading to renewed calls for action against neighbouring Pakistan. India accuses Pakistan of supporting terrorism in Kashmir, a region both countries claim but have fought over for decades.

India's army chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, visited Srinagar to assess security measures, while forces scoured Pahalgam for the militants involved in the attack. India alleges that Pakistani elements were involved in the assault, in which militants opened fire on 26 men in a meadow. However, Islamabad has denied any involvement. The attack has fueled public anger in India, with renewed calls for swift action against Pakistan. India has long accused Pakistan of supporting separatist insurgencies in Kashmir, claims that Islamabad denies.

The tension between the two nations has led to multiple conflicts, and this incident has escalated the situation. India’s financial markets also felt the impact, with stock indexes closing lower by 0.7-0.9 per cent. The Indian rupee weakened by 0.2 per cent, and bond yields rose. Relations between the two countries have worsened, with India suspending a crucial water-sharing treaty and Pakistan closing its airspace to Indian airlines. This has caused flight delays and diversions on international routes, especially to the US and Europe. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to track down the perpetrators, with opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also visiting Srinagar to meet with victims and local officials.

Growing concerns have surfaced that India could consider military retaliation against Pakistan, similar to the 2019 strikes after a suicide bombing in Indian-controlled Kashmir. India has issued notices identifying three individuals involved in the attack, two of whom are believed to be Pakistani nationals. However, India has yet to provide further evidence. In response, Indian authorities demolished the homes of two suspected militants on April 25, and sporadic gunfire was reported along the Line of Control, despite a 2021 ceasefire agreement between the nations.
