Indian Navy to continue equipping ships with BrahMos supersonic missiles

10 June 2026 15:52

Indian Navy vessels are set to continue being equipped with supersonic cruise missiles produced by the Russian–Indian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace, BrahMos Aerospace Managing Co-Director Alexander Maksichev said in an interview with TASS.

“All modern Indian Navy ships, the front-line vessels, are equipped with and will continue to be equipped with BrahMos missiles. The fleet has tested them during various trials. Development of the missiles has not been put on hold; we are constantly enhancing their combat capabilities,” he said, speaking on the sidelines of the "Flot-2026" International Naval Exhibition.

The missile system was jointly developed by Russia’s Machine-Building Scientific Production Association and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In 1995, the two sides established BrahMos Aerospace to manufacture the weapon, which is now produced in land-, sea-, and air-launched variants.

The Philippines was the first foreign customer to acquire the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, marking its initial export deal.
