Indian PM may visit Russia in 2027 if year-end trip falls through – Moscow

10 September 2026 16:59

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could visit Russia in 2027 if his schedule prevents him from making the trip by the end of this year, with Moscow keeping the door open for a visit, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters.

“There is an understanding between the leaders that they meet at least once in one country or the other, on a rotating basis. Last year, we were in New Delhi, so this time it is the Indian prime minister’s turn. He is well aware of this, and the leaders have repeatedly discussed the matter,” Ushakov said in response to a question about when Modi would visit Russia.

“Our door is open. If an opportunity arises that we can literally seize, then the prime minister will probably come to us. If not, we will certainly hold a meeting in the first half of next year,” the Russian official emphasised.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s most recent visit to Russia took place on July 8–9, 2024, when he travelled to Moscow for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, his first trip to the country since the start of the Ukraine conflict.

During the visit, he held extensive bilateral talks with President Vladimir Putin, focused on strengthening the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership in areas such as trade, energy, defence and technology, and the two sides set a bilateral trade target of $100 billion by 2030.

Putin conferred on Modi Russia’s highest civilian honour, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, in recognition of his contribution to bilateral ties.
