International Court of Justice sets deadline for Azerbaijan, Armenia
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has granted Azerbaijan and Armenia until November 12, 2025, to prepare their submissions for cases related to racial discrimination.
According to a statement issued by the court, both nations are required to file counter-memorials—documents rebutting the other party's arguments on the substantive issues of the case, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Armenia initiated proceedings against Azerbaijan at the ICJ on September 16, 2021, accusing Baku of discriminatory practices. Azerbaijan, in turn, filed a counterclaim on September 23, 2021, alleging that Armenia has engaged in and continues to engage in discriminatory actions against ethnic Azerbaijanis in the region.
Both parties sought provisional measures from the court to prevent escalating tensions during the proceedings. These measures were partially granted. However, the cases' progress was halted after both sides challenged the court’s jurisdiction.
The ICJ’s ruling to set a deadline for the counter-memorials marks a step forward in addressing the long-standing disputes between the two countries.
