Iran considers Oman as primary host for indirect talks with US

07 April 2025 14:11

Iran has identified Oman as its primary nominee to host potential indirect negotiations with the United States, a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Esmaeil Baqaei said.

In response to questions regarding the ongoing discussions about indirect talks and the role of third parties, Baqaei addressed the matter during a press conference, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.

"The history of participation of other parties in advancing indirect negotiations is clear. In case such a process is shaped, Oman will be the chief nominee for that (hosting the talks)," Baqaei stated.

The spokesperson also dismissed rumors suggesting that indirect talks between Iran and the US had already commenced, labeling reports about the formation of a negotiation committee as "mere speculations." He clarified, "The Foreign Ministry is in charge of advancing any negotiations."

Baqaei further revealed that Iran had responded to a letter from US President Donald Trump and was now awaiting a decision from Washington. "Iran’s proposal for indirect talks was generous and wise considering the background of the subject and the processes of the nuclear negotiations during the past decade. We are focusing on what we have proposed," he added.

In parallel, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to diplomatic engagement. Speaking on April 5, Araghchi emphasized that Iran would be open to negotiations on its nuclear program if it led to the removal of sanctions. "Having had that experience, we are now prepared for negotiations on our nuclear program and the removal of sanctions on the basis of the logic of trust-building in exchange for the lifting of the cruel sanctions against Iran," the minister stated.

Araghchi also criticized the US for its unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, despite Iran’s voluntary actions to ensure the peaceful nature of its nuclear activities. Furthermore, he condemned the US’ contradictory stance of calling for direct negotiations while threatening military action, asserting that such behavior violated the UN Charter. He described the approach as "meaningless," but reiterated Iran’s readiness to explore the possibility of indirect talks.
