Iran protests inflict millions of dollars in damage on Mashhad infrastructure
Mashhad’s mayor, Mohammadreza Qalandar Sharif, stated that recent unrest in Iran caused damage exceeding 2 trillion tomans (about $13.7 million) to the city’s aboveground and underground infrastructure.
Sixteen buses have been destroyed or taken out of service, around 1,000 trees and 3,000 shrubs burned, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.
Qalandar Sharif also confirmed that two municipal employees were killed during the recent nights of unrest—one shot in the head by what he described as “terrorist elements,” and another who perished in a fire, with only part of the body remaining.
He added that protesters damaged or disabled 300 traffic monitoring cameras, resulting in significant congestion across the city, particularly at intersections.
Since late December 2025, widespread protests have erupted across Iran over economic hardship and public dissatisfaction with the government.
According to the rights group HRANA, at least 544 people, including 48 security personnel, have died during demonstrations. Authorities have arrested over 10,600 individuals since the demonstrations began.
