Iran unveils new air defence system resembling Russia’s Pantsir-S

Images circulating online appear to show a previously unknown Iranian air defenve system resembling Russia’s Pantsir-S missile and gun platform, drawing attention from military observers and defence analysts.

The Telegram channel “Voenniy Obozrevatel" published two photographs of the system, which is mounted on a four-axle truck chassis and equipped with what appear to be at least 12 surface-to-air missiles. Unlike the Russian Pantsir-S, however, the Iranian system does not appear to include any gun armament.

Iranian authorities have not officially disclosed the name, specifications, or operational capabilities of the system.

Defence analysts noted similarities between the newly spotted platform and Russia’s Pantsir-S, a mobile short- to medium-range air defence system designed to intercept aircraft, drones, and precision-guided munitions.

The Russian Pantsir-S, typically mounted on a KamAZ-6560 four-axle chassis, combines anti-aircraft missiles with twin 2A38M automatic cannons. Its arsenal includes short-range TKB-1055 missiles developed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles.
