Iranian FM lands in Oman, slams US contradictions in nuclear talks
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in Muscat, Oman for a new round of indirect nuclear talks with the US, warning that progress remains hindered by what he described as Washington’s contradictory negotiating stance.
The talks, scheduled for May 11, mark the fourth round of indirect dialogue between the two sides and are being facilitated by Omani officials, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed Araghchi’s arrival and the resumption of negotiations.
“The Americans have taken contradictory stances during the talks. This remains one of the most serious challenges in the negotiation process,” Araghchi said ahead of the meeting.
The US delegation is being led by Steve Witkoff, the US president’s special envoy. Prior rounds of talks took place on April 12 and April 26 in Muscat, and on April 19 in Rome.
These consultations have all been conducted indirectly, with Oman serving as a mediator. The fourth round was initially set for May 3 but was postponed due to logistical complications, according to Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi. A separate session scheduled for May 2 between Iran and the E3 — the UK, France, and Germany — was also canceled for the same reason.
The negotiations come against a backdrop of heightened regional and international tensions. Iranian officials have reiterated their willingness to engage in constructive dialogue, but insist that any progress depends on Washington adopting a consistent and transparent approach, particularly regarding the lifting of sanctions and honoring any commitments reached.
