Iranian FM meets Hamas officials in Doha, reaffirms support for Palestine
On September 4, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks with senior Hamas officials in Doha, focusing on the war in Gaza, Iran’s ties with the Palestinian movement, and Qatari mediation efforts.
In a statement, Hamas said discussions centred on what it called the ongoing “genocidal campaign” by Israel against Palestinians, including “crimes of starvation and killing through every brutal means,” Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The two sides also addressed broader threats to the Palestinian cause, such as Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank and tensions surrounding the al-Aqsa Mosque.
According to Hamas, diplomatic contacts aimed at halting the conflict were also reviewed, particularly mediation led by Egypt and Qatar, alongside the group’s own outreach. The talks further touched on the repercussions of Israel’s June strikes against Iran and their impact on regional dynamics.
Araghchi reiterated Tehran’s backing for the Palestinians, stressing that “the Zionist occupation is an enemy of the [Islamic] nation and an enemy of humanity,” and adding, “This truth has been confirmed thanks to the resilience and sacrifices of the Palestinian people in Gaza.”
He pointed to mounting global demonstrations against Israel as evidence of growing awareness. “The growing protests and rallies in various countries around the world against the crimes of the Israeli entity clearly reflect the international community's awakening to the genocide in occupied Palestine,” he said.
The Iranian foreign minister called for a coordinated effort by Muslim-majority states to stop the fighting, ensure humanitarian relief, and seek accountability. He underscored the “critical need for a continued, coordinated, and comprehensive effort by Islamic nations to halt the genocide, deliver urgent humanitarian aid to the besieged population, and bring the criminal Israeli leaders to justice.”
Araghchi’s trip also included a meeting with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to whom he delivered a message from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Discussions at Lusail Palace focused on bilateral relations and regional developments, with both sides emphasising the importance of international action.
According to Qatari media, the two officials discussed the conflict in Gaza, regional security, and the need for what they called decisive steps to end the bloodshed. They also highlighted the importance of prosecuting those responsible and countering what they described as Israel’s “aggressive warmongering and pursuit of hegemony.”
