Iranian Foreign Ministry accuses US of “blackmailing Oman”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has sharply criticised US threats directed at the Sultanate of Oman.
He said a warning issued by the US Treasury regarding possible sanctions over the imposition of fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz represents “an attempt to blackmail a sovereign state and a member of the United Nations.”
Baghaei also described US actions as “another sign of the moral bankruptcy of its system of governance and policy.”
“The threat of imposing sanctions on Oman under a pretext is an absolutely illegal act, contrary to the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and international law. The international community must respond to such an approach with full responsibility in order to prevent the growing normalisation of violations of international legal norms,” the spokesperson stressed.
