Iranian leader: Lebanon must not become another Gaza
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that the situation in Lebanon has the potential to spark a regional conflict that could pose a threat to the entire world.
“There is a danger that the events unfolding in Lebanon will spread throughout the region. We must not allow Lebanon to become another Gaza under Israeli control. These developments could escalate into a regional conflict that would be dangerous for the future of the world and the planet itself,” Caliber.Az reports, citing President Pezeshkian’s interview with foreign media.
“We must prevent Israel's ongoing criminal actions. Hezbollah cannot stand alone against Israel that is backed by Western nations,” the Iranian president concluded.
Moreover, EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell expressed willingness to meet with President Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
"We must keep lines of communication open," Borrell stated.
He informed journalists that a meeting with the Iranian leader may be held this week. In response, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi stated that Iran is ready to sincerely fulfill its mission and discuss issues of mutual interest and concern.
The health ministry of Lebanon reports that at least 492 people have died in extensive Israeli air strikes aimed at Hezbollah, marking the deadliest day of conflict in nearly 20 years. Thousands of families have evacuated their homes as the Israeli military targeted 1,600 Hezbollah installations, built up since the 2006 war.
In response, Hezbollah fired over 200 rockets into northern Israel, injuring two people from shrapnel, according to military sources. Global leaders are calling for restraint as tensions escalate towards potential all-out war. Lebanon's health ministry noted that among the deceased are 35 children and 58 women, with 1,645 others injured. Health Minister Firass Abiad reported significant displacement of families due to the air strikes. UN Secretary General António Guterres expressed concern about the situation, emphasizing a desire to avoid Lebanon becoming "another Gaza."
