Iranian security forces use green lasers against protesters in Mashhad
Security forces in the Iranian city of Mashhad have used green lasers against participants in ongoing protests, Caliber.Az reports via an Iranian Telegram channel.
Footage circulating online shows beams of light being directed at crowds of demonstrators. Despite a significant security presence, protesters continue to take to the streets, facing ongoing repression by authorities.
The protests began after a sharp collapse in the Iranian rial, which has plummeted amid soaring inflation estimated at 40-50% annually. Rising food prices—up more than 70% in some areas—along with unemployment, water shortages, and allegations of corruption, fueled widespread anger. Merchants and shopkeepers in Tehran, including at Alaeddin Shopping Centre, were among the first to close businesses and join the demonstrations.
Since the start of the protests on December 28, 2025. at least 116 people have died, including 38 security personnel. Among the fatalities, seven were under the age of 18, according to the rights advocacy group HRANA.
As of January 11,the authorities have arrested at least 2,638 people in protests that have taken place in 574 locations across 185 cities, spanning all 31 provinces of Iran.
