Israel seeks release of 20-35 hostages from Hamas as ceasefire talks begin
Israeli authorities are negotiating with Hamas to secure the release of 20 to 35 hostages held in the Gaza Strip as the initial step towards a ceasefire agreement.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant revealed the figure during a Knesset session.
Israeli media indicate that of 115 hostages believed to be held by Hamas, 76 are thought to be alive, Caliber.Az reports.
The first group to be released is expected to include women, children, elderly individuals, and those who are wounded or ill.
"On the question of who is considered women and the elderly, there is no dispute; however, on the question of who is considered injured and sick, there is," continued Gallant. "We are working to maximize the number [of hostages].”
An Israeli official had told reporters weeks ago that Israel was determined to ensure the maximal number of live hostages was freed under that category during phase one of the deal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has set this issue as one of his readiness for a deal.
All the other live hostages would be released in phase two of the deal, but Hamas and Israel have to negotiate the issue of a permanent ceasefire fire prior to the start of phase two of the deal.
Consultations are scheduled to start on the 16th day following the first phase, potentially extending beyond the initial six-week timeframe.
Qatar, Egypt, and the US are mediating the discussions. A major meeting on the hostage negotiations is set for August 15, with Israel's negotiating team expected to participate, although Hamas has indicated it will not attend.
