Israeli army sets up nine military bases in Syrian territory

10 February 2025 19:54

Israeli military forces have established nine "permanent" military sites inside Syrian territory as part of Operation "Arrow of Bashan," which was launched two months ago.

These bases, ranging from Mount Hermon to the border triangle in the southern Golan Heights, have been constructed to withstand harsh winter conditions and are equipped with the necessary infrastructure to serve as strategic observation and security centres, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The military sites are part of Israel’s ongoing efforts to establish a buffer zone between Syria and the Golan Heights, with the primary aim of strengthening the northeastern region's defence.

According to Israeli military sources, the new bases are designed to act as a security strip that will enhance Israel's ability to monitor and respond to any potential threats from its northern borders.

While the Israeli army has worked to minimize direct interaction with the local Syrian population, it has sought to strengthen its relations with the residents of the neighbouring Syrian villages. Despite efforts to avoid provoking local sentiments, these communities have expressed concerns about the continued Israeli presence in the region. The proximity of these new military bases has stirred unease, with many residents fearing the implications of the Israeli forces’ prolonged presence.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Mount Hermon about six weeks ago and confirmed that Israel’s military presence in the area would continue until at least the end of 2025. Israeli defence officials have reiterated that their forces will remain in the region as long as necessary to ensure there are no threats to the security of Israel.

The strategic move follows a series of Israeli airstrikes, which escalated following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on December 8.

During that time, Israeli forces launched numerous attacks, targeting Syrian military assets, including air and naval bases, air defence systems, and missile storage facilities. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, approximately 80% of Syria’s military capabilities were destroyed in the attacks.
