ISW on peculiarities of Ukrainian counteroffensive Asymmetric gradient of attrition

Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations on at least three sectors of the front and advanced on July 25.

Thus, Ukraine’s Armed Forces have significantly depleted the Russian troops’ forces during their operations, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces conducted offensive operations in the Bakhmut, Melitopol (western Zaporizhia Oblast), and Berdyansk (Zaporizhia-Donetsk Oblast border area) directions.

Ukrainian sources reported that Ukrainian forces advanced up to 750 metres in the direction of Staromayorske (9km south of Velyka Novosilka), and Russian sources claimed Ukrainian forces made marginal advances west of Orikhiv.

Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar reported that Russian forces are dying at a rate eight times higher than Ukrainian forces in the Bakhmut area and 5.3 times higher in the Berdyansk and Melitopol directions.

ISW has previously assessed that Ukrainian counteroffensive operations aim to create an asymmetrical attrition gradient that conserves Ukrainian manpower at the cost of a slower rate of territorial gains, while gradually wearing down Russian manpower and equipment.
