Italian defence minister arrives in Kyiv, discusses Ukraine's reconstruction PHOTO

16 January 2025 15:13

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has arrived in Kyiv on an official visit, marking a significant step in Italy's ongoing support for Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia.

The visit began with a meeting between Crosetto and Ukraine's Minister of Strategic Industries, Herman Smetanin, Caliber.Az reports, citing a report by the Italian Defence Ministry.

During the discussions, Smetanin expressed gratitude for Italy's steadfast support in Ukraine’s legitimate defence efforts.

"The day in Kyiv begins with a meeting with Ukraine's Minister of Strategic Industries, Herman Smetanin, who thanked Italy for ensuring its support for the legitimate defense of Ukraine and its people. This meeting is an opportunity for dialogue on technical collaboration, including in the defense industry sector," Crosetto stated.

The talks also emphasized the importance of reconstruction efforts in Ukraine following the conflict.

Crosetto highlighted Italy’s readiness to contribute to Ukraine’s rebuilding process, leveraging Italy’s advanced technology and expertise.

It is important to note that since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Italy has been a committed ally of Kyiv, providing military, humanitarian, and diplomatic assistance. The country has supplied ten military aid packages, including advanced systems such as the Franco-Italian SAMP/T air defence systems. In December 2024, the Italian government extended its commitment to military aid through the end of 2025, emphasizing its long-term dedication to Ukraine’s security and stability.

Shortly after the onset of the war, Italy contributed €1 million to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for emergency relief in Ukraine. Additionally, in February 2022, Italy transferred €110 million directly to Ukraine’s government to support its budget amid the escalating crisis.

Beyond financial aid, Italy has pledged to restore Ukraine’s cultural heritage damaged by the war. For instance, it committed €500,000 to repair the roof of Odesa's historic Transfiguration Cathedral, which was severely damaged in a missile strike.
