Italy's defence minister doubts Trump could pull US out of NATO
Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has expressed confidence that the United States is unlikely to withdraw from NATO, despite recent remarks by US President Donald Trump.
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Crosetto said he does not believe such a move is feasible.
“I do not think that Donald Trump can withdraw from NATO. He would need the approval of Congress, and it is unlikely that such a move would gain support,” he noted.
However, the minister acknowledged the possibility that Washington could scale back its military presence in Europe. “A decision could be made to withdraw troops from Europe. That would make us weaker, less protected. At the moment, we are not capable of acting together to replace them,” Crosetto said.
Trump had previously voiced strong criticism of NATO and raised the prospect of the United States leaving the alliance, prompting concern among European allies.
