Kazakhstan considers building new airport in Astana
Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has instructed the government and the Astana mayor’s office to study the possibility of building a new airport in the capital to boost its transport and transit capacity.
Tokayev said the move was necessary to strengthen Astana’s role as a regional transport hub. He recalled that authorities had previously discussed developing full-scale aviation hubs, including expanding the existing capital airport, but warned that structural challenges remain, Caliber.Az reports per Kazakh presidential press service.
The president drew attention to Kazakhstan’s shortage of aviation fuel, noting that domestic production is insufficient and is already hindering the development of air hubs. He tasked the government with increasing aviation fuel output and said the option of constructing a new oil refinery should be considered.
Tokayev emphasized that the authorities must clearly define their position on the issue and put forward a practical solution to ensure the sustainable development of the country’s aviation sector.
