Kremlin: Russia to continue contacts with Serbian leadership

Russia will continue contacts with Serbia’s political leadership and business representatives, says Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov following the resignation of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

He made clear that Moscow expects relations between both countries to continue developing constructively across all areas, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

“Relations between Russia and Serbia stand much higher than simply relations with individual personalities,” Peskov noted.

Vučić has transferred his duties to Ana Brnabic, speaker of the country’s unicameral parliament.

Speaking during the ceremony to transfer the presidential regalia, Vučić said he will safeguard this position until the people elect a new president.

Vučić announced his resignation on September 27. Under Serbia’s Constitution, an election for a new head of state must be held no later than December 27.

Snap parliamentary elections in Serbia are scheduled for October 25.

Vučić will head the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) list and will be its candidate for prime minister.

The SNS’s main opponent will be the “Student List” coalition, led by 56-year-old cardiologist Ilija Srdanovic from Novi Sad.
