Kremlin warns Lithuania would face nuclear threat if it hosts nuclear weapons

11 September 2026 11:19

Lithuania would become a potential target for Russian nuclear weapons if it allows them to be deployed on its territory, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has warned.

Peskov was responding to plans by Lithuania’s parliament, the Seimas, to amend the country’s constitution to remove restrictions on hosting foreign military bases and weapons of mass destruction, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media

The proposed constitutional amendment could be adopted in early 2027. If approved, it would remove Article 137 of Lithuania’s Constitution, which currently prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases on Lithuanian territory.

The move gained momentum after the Lithuanian parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs voted 7–2 on September 9 to approve the proposal.
