Kyrgyzstan thwarts coup attempt and mass unrest plot Criminal Group Arrested / PHOTO
On April 9, the State Committee for National Security (SCNS-KR) of Kyrgyzstan confirmed the thwarting of an attempt to incite mass unrest and a subsequent coup, with those involved in the criminal group arrested.
The agency revealed that it had uncovered and foiled plans to instigate localised conflicts, followed by large-scale protests and unrest, to sow interethnic discord, Caliber.Az reports via Kyrgyz media.
"The primary goal was to destabilise the socio-political situation, leading to a coup attempt," the committee stated.
Since the beginning of the year, the committee had been monitoring the group, which was reportedly funded by opposition sympathisers. One of the alleged organisers is believed to be hiding in the United Arab Emirates.
The group's members were reportedly instructed to produce a fake provocative video, in which a "beaten, semi-naked Kyrgyz woman" would falsely claim that foreign nationals had assaulted her.
The committee also clarified that the organisation of these disruptive actions was being coordinated from abroad, and operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining organisers.
