Lavrov-Rubio talks top Russian FM’s New York agenda

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York as both officials attend the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting will be the first item on Lavrov’s agenda in New York, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media. 

Lavrov is also scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the General Assembly. A report on Bucha is also due to be presented.

Lavrov has already arrived in New York to participate in the high-level week.

The Russian and US foreign ministers have held several meetings over the past year as Washington has sought to facilitate an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine. They previously met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September 2025, when Rubio urged Moscow to take steps towards ending the conflict.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump at the UN headquarters in New York on September 22. Their discussions focused on efforts to end the war, including a possible ceasefire covering attacks on energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy later said Ukraine was ready to halt such attacks if Russia agreed to reciprocal measures.
