Lebanese PM urges diplomatic resolution to ongoing conflict with Israel

29 September 2024 17:46

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has announced that the conflict in southern Lebanon will inevitably end by complying with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which brought an end to the war in 2006.

Mikati made these remarks during a press conference in Beirut, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

"The bloodshed must end, as Lebanon has no option other than a diplomatic solution to the crisis. We are willing to reach an agreement, and the Lebanese army is prepared to fulfill its assigned mission," he emphasised.

Mikati clarified that this involves establishing a temporary ceasefire of 21 days to allow both sides—Lebanon and Israel—to engage in negotiations to resolve border issues.

The Lebanese government declared a three-day mourning period following the death of Secretary-General of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced this decision after an emergency meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, urging citizens to stand in solidarity amid the looming threat facing the country.

“We must respond to this challenge with full responsibility and set aside our political disagreements. Our unity is our strongest weapon against Israel,” Mikati stated.

The prime minister emphasised that the government is doing its best to confront the hateful and destructive war that Israel is waging against Lebanon.

"We call on the international community to stop Israeli aggression and compel Israel to adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the conflict in 2006," he stressed.

Mikati urged citizens to rally around the Lebanese Army and security forces during these challenging periods.

"The government asserts that the Lebanese Army plays a vital role in protecting the nation's borders, unity, and legitimacy," the prime minister stated.
