Danish soldiers in Greenland put on combat alert over possible US attack
Danish forces stationed in Greenland were ordered to be ready for combat in the event of a potential US attack on the Arctic island, with the directive issued from the highest level last week.
Under the order, Danish troops were tasked with strengthening Greenland’s defence, prompting military and civilian aircraft to systematically transport personnel and equipment from Denmark to Greenland, reflecting a broad political will to engage in combat if the US were to strike, Caliber.Az reports via Danish media.
Despite the military buildup, neither the Danish government nor opposition parties considered a US attack likely. However, in response to threats from US President Donald Trump, who did not rule out such a scenario, Danish authorities and opposition decided to prepare for a possible strike.
The large-scale operation, named Arctic Endurance, was accelerated in response to recent political developments. Its plan includes multiple phases, such as the potential deployment of additional troops and resources to defend Greenland. The primary goal is to demonstrate the readiness of Danish forces to protect the island’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The order also covers ammunition reserves to ensure troops can engage immediately if threatened. Arctic Endurance operates around the clock, with significant army forces already stationed in Greenland.
The Danish Ministry of Defence emphasised that the increased troop presence is solely part of joint exercises with allied forces in Greenland’s unique Arctic conditions. The operation will continue through the end of 2026, encompassing land, sea, and air components.
