Lithuania calls for EU troops in Ukraine Amid new financial support conditions
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis has urged European nations to reconsider French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal to deploy troops to Ukraine.
He emphasized that if reports about Russian units utilizing North Korean munitions and personnel are confirmed, Europe may need to reassess its military strategy, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
Macron's initial proposal was rejected earlier this year by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who asserted that no European or NATO troops would be stationed in Ukraine. Landsbergis expressed concern over the passive response of European countries and stressed the need for proactive measures.
In a related development, the European Commission has outlined conditions for Ukraine to secure a new loan of €35 billion, which will be funded through expropriated Russian assets.
European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders stated that the loan will only be disbursed if Ukraine meets specific political preconditions, as detailed in a separate memorandum. While he did not disclose the exact requirements, he urged the European Parliament to expedite approval of this financial mechanism to support Ukraine’s ongoing efforts.
