Lithuanian president: US-EU divergence on Ukraine won’t undermine our bilateral ties
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said on May 7 that despite differing views between the European Union and the United States over the war in Ukraine, these disagreements will not harm bilateral relations between Lithuania and Washington.
"Lithuania is likely one of the strongest supporters of transatlantic partnership within the EU, and we are ready to enhance relations in various fields," Caliber.Az reports Nausėda as saying.
"Although we acknowledge some differences in positions regarding EU and US support for Ukraine and potential outcomes of the war, this should not negatively impact our relations. We will strive to resolve any misunderstandings between the EU and the US."
Nausėda added that while the future looks promising, the geopolitical situation remains uncertain. "We must ensure that US attention remains focused on Europe. This is a challenge, and we recognise it," he stated.
In his remarks, Nausėda also pointed out that Lithuania's cooperation with the United States extends beyond military matters, highlighting the growing energy partnership. "Lithuania purchases around 50% of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US. Lithuanian companies are investing more in the US, and likewise, US firms are increasing their investments in Lithuania," he said.
